Feb. 5th, We will be meeting at the Ha Ha Tonka Visitors Parking on D Highway at 10:00 AM. The ride takes me about 5 hrs to complete so I will have an alternate route for those who wish to ride less. This will be one heck of a ride. Those o...f you traing for the DK200 will appreciate the distance and difficulty. There will be no gas stations along the route so come prepared. Be sure to grab the camera too because the Niangua River Valley will give you a beautiful backdrop. I will be marking the course in Yellow Gary Fisher Tape and handing out maps.

We will be meeting at the pavilion on 134 highway, inthe Lake of the Ozarks State Park around 10:00 AM. This will be aMonsterCross Ride so be prepared for Singletrack/Lot's of graVEL/7-8 MILES ofBlackTop.

There is a gas station in Montreal so pack light. I believe theweather will be 60 and sunny. Lake of the Ozarks State Park is between Kaiserand Brumley MO on 42 Highway.

Turn into the park on 134 highway and drive 4+miles until you see the horse stables on the right. Drive PAST the stables andon the right will be an open field and U shaped parking. We will bethere.

Gravel grinders are a way of life around these parts. And when you have some of the best gravel roads to ride on who can blame a guy/gal for wanting ride for hours on such awesomeness?

Hermann Hairy out and back Ride March 20

It's ride at your own pace, no waiting for the groups to catch up at intersections or stops unless you are in a group the decides to do so. I do have some awesome maps, better than last time, for all so you can't get lost. The half way point in Owensville has a Moto Stop, Subway and McDonalds to choose from. Hills are tame this time, nothing too big.

There is also a group leaving Owensville (Therapy Source) at noon riding from there to Hermann with transportation back to Owensville.

Latest forecast is rain overnight Saturday but looks to be done by the Sunday 9am start time, might get a stay shower here or there. Wind is SE at 10mph, that will give us a little help on the way home. My guess temps will be in the 50’s to start the ride but will quickly get warm up, high for Sunday is 73.

I plan to stick around Wings for a short time after the ride, enough time for a beer and sandwich but need to get home, I image that will be the case for many, I will make sure all make it back to Hermann OK.

Hermann 65 mile Grinder Feb 14

CANCELLED - Snow coming in Saturday Night and more snow on Sunday.

Get ready for some serious gravel grinding this coming Sunday in Hermann. 65 miles, 4000+ feet of elevation will make or break you.
Ride starts at 10am sharp from Time For Pie.

Gas station at 28 miles, food and water there.

Short cut at 36 miles, you can cut off 12 miles making this a 53 mile ride.

Expect this to be a 5+ hour ride.
No sag support and no course markings other than the maps and road signs are up.

I’m planning on going out sat afternoon and marking the roads. I’m also putting together a que sheet. There is a gas station in New Bloomfield (about ½ way) and I’m trying to get someone to drive around for an unofficial sag support.

There is no food or Water on the route. The way it is mapped out on Gmap is to meet at the shop and go from here. Once finished, Beer, Coffee and/or lunch at any of the Downtown places open on Sundays if people want to. Hermann Cycling Rides

Need fuel after your done, be sure to visit Wings a Balazin just a few doors down from Time for Pie. Only places open on Sunday.

Last Gravel Ride Report

Today was the last of the Herman Gravel Grinder series. This year we've had 6 weeks worth of rides with only one day of bad weather. Lot's of new faces came to Hermann to enjoy was totaled 284 miles with over 23 hours of ride time.

Every ride has it's moments and today were the dogs. Seemed like every dog along the route was out and about giving us a bark or two or a small chase.

Here are the Baumstark brothers, "what's up dogs"?

The winner of all dogs today was this one. About 7 miles into the ride up Devils Back Bone he decided to join us awhile. Awhile turned into more than 6 miles of running along with us. This dog has some endurance for sure! Eventually he tired out and could not keep up. Hope he made it home OK.

Final gravel Grinder of the year. After next weekend the racing season begins with most Sunday spent racing or hitting up the trails in Jeff City or STL.

Sundays ride will be a 50/50, about 50 percent of the ride North of the river, come back to town, fill up with water/nutrition and then do the other half of the ride South of the river.

Will be good for anyone who does not have 6 hours to blow on a bike ride, you can start the ride 10AM at time for pie, do the first half and call it a day or ride on and do the full 63 miles.

Feb 8 Ride Report

As normal we headed out from Time for Pie at 10 am sharp!

Today's crew was Jason, Andy and Justin from Wild Trak Bikes , Andy from CBC in Columbia and locals Jeff, Danny and Shaun.

Today's' route took us North across the river into Montgomery County all the way to I 70 and back. Came to near 65 miles at 13.3 MPH with a few less hills coming in at 2900 feet of climbing.

Shaun must have overslept a bit, Bernadette and Me-Mo drove him out to meet us about 15 miles into the ride.

Last week a few ended the ride more hungry then they would have liked. Not this time!

Look from the bridge on I-70 just a bit past the half way mark.

At first the ride seemed a bit flat to me and boring. Being a new route I had no idea what was in store so I did begin to worrie . But after the 12 mile ride down the Katy trail and up north past HWY K things started to get interesting visually and had a few challenging hill clumbs. Some of the names were Grave Yard Hill and Devils Back Bone. With names like that they have to be tough.

Ended up being a good ride, don't think anyone was disappointed.

Next weekend is the last of the Hermann Gravel Grinders. So far we have logged 222 plus miles and over 20 hours on the fine Hermann gravel roads.

Only two more Gravel Grinder this year and the fun will come to and end.

Sunday will be a 60 mile loop with a gas station to fill up on water and other items at the 35 mile mark. Here is a map of the ride (60 miles)

UPDATE: Short cut version added (46 miles) for those who want to ride but not up for 60 miles.

At the 27 mile mark those that want the full 60 miles will go on, those that need a short cut will branch off at Mill Pond Rd to HH, to K to Leach Branch Rd. Leach Branch is where both routes come back together. I would image both groups will meet again along this area before we get back to town.

I will have printed maps for both group and a little more info on the 46 mile route so no one gets lost.

Some new roads but mostly roads I have been on before. I would say not as much climbing as last week from a long steady perspective, more rolling.

Average MPH has been around 12.5. Be ready for 5 hours of ride time.

Sunday Jan 11 we leave at 11am from Time 4 Pie on Schiller and 4th st. We'll stay South of the river over some awesome gravel roads with big hills and awesome views.

This is a no drop ride, we'll wait at intersections and road crossings for all to re-group before heading on. Bring what you need for at least 3 hours, there are no service stations along the way.

Beginning Sunday Jan 11, 2009 there will be an organized gravel grinder ride each Sunday leading up to the Froze Toes road race. These rides are intend to be base mile rides.

The gravel roads in the Hermann area are well groomed, zero traffic, lots of big hills with stunning views. Unless the weather absolutely prevents a bike from moving forward due to snow or ice, the rides are on. There are about 5 of us in Hermann that plan to be on these rides each week. Mountain bikes and cross bikes work great.
